How To Install Grommets and Eyelets in 5 Easy Steps Hastypearl

How To Install Grommets and Eyelets in 5 Easy Steps

Hastypearl

I started laughing while downloading these images,
thinking about the teacher on
Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

Only instead it sounded like this...
Anyone? Anyone?
Who knows how to Install a Grommet or Eyelet?
:)

Actually, its kind of a fun thing to do,
and its almost always for a fun project when I do it!

Its really simple and will give you a nice finished look.

The only difference in the word Grommet and Eyelet,
is that an Eyelet is smaller.

Otherwise, they are both installed the same way.

 Eyelets come in two parts.
The top usually has a longer stem on it,
and the back, has a larger hole, and slips over the stem.

There are really only two things that can go wrong,
so it doesn't hurt to practice on a scrap, first.

One, you can accidentally reverse the two pieces,
and two, if you don't hold the eyelet tool straight,
it can make the front a little wonky.

Again, just practice and you'll be fine !

These are the two tool pieces.
One is the anvil, and the other is a stem that you hit.

I'll show you what the pieces look like without paper or fabric first,
so it will be easier to see.

1. The first step is to cut a hole in your fabric or paper,
the same size as the openings of the eyelet.
I use a hole punch or one of my pointed razors.
Use scissors or even a pencil.

2. In the picture below, place the kit anvil on something flat.
I use a Vintage Anvil that I bought for $5 at an estate sale.
I couldn't be without it. I use it for all kinds of things.
If you don't have an anvil, you can use a rock, or your sidewalk.
Use your imagination.

3. Place the front piece face down on the kit anvil
and the long stem through the paper or fabric.

4. Then, place the back piece over that long stem.

It will look like the image below.

I did this WITHOUT my paper,
just so that you could see what it would look like.

5. Then, you line up the tool stem, on top of the back piece,
and pound it lightly with your hammer.

It really only takes a few light taps.

If you did everything right, it will look like the image below
where I actually did the steps WITH the paper project.

So, this time WITH the project...

The image below, shows the long stem of the eyelet front
coming up through the art piece.
I then slipped the back piece, over the long stem.

This time, with the front piece pushed through the paper
in the image below, is ready to hammer.

Use the tool, to lightly tap the back piece onto the front piece.
Try to keep it straight up and down,
so that the front isn't flatter on one side than the other.

Flip it over, and it will look like the image below.

Sometimes, the anvil will still be attached,
but its really easy to unstick.

*

This is what it will look like on the back.
No more raggedy or frayed edges.

Depending on what size Grommets or Eyelets you get,
you can use them for belt making,
shower curtains, cafe curtains, tote bags,
pillows, bookmaking and like I have done here,
for hanging Mixed Media Projects.

There are also other tools for installing Grommets and Eyelets,
like the Cropadile.

I like these little inexpensive kits, better.
When you run out of Eyelets,
you can just buy replacements.

You can find them at art box stores,
and fabric stores in the notions department.

So, Ferris,
if you had known that you were going to learn how to install an Eyelet,
you might have gone to school that day that you missed :)

For those of you that haven't done this before,
I hope this helps and that you try it very soon!

If you do, let me see what you made, OK?
Anyone? Anyone? :)

Hastypearl Gets Antique "y" !

Hastypearl, Gets Antique "y"!

Hopefully, it's clear to you by now, that Hastypearl,
is about Vintage Parts and Heirloom Art.
For me, the joy is Mixing the Two.

Last year, for 8 months, I had a small case
in Boerne, Texas, just west/outside of San Antonio.
I really enjoyed it and not surprisingly,
inquired about "upsizing" to a larger space.

The good news is, that the space owners, really love their spaces.
The bad news is, that the space owners, really love their spaces!

The owners, promised me,
that my monthly"bugging/reminding" them
about a new space was encouraged, and so...I did!

Well, it turned out, that one shop owner,
wanted to consolidate two spaces to one,
and a February placing, opened up for me.

Awesome, News and I had a MONTH, to shop.
Piece of Cake!

I was sure that that was Plenty of time, to Fill my small space.
Boy, was I Surprised!

Its not that I didn't go to Many Estate Sales and Auctions,
because I did!

I was determined, to make this space Legendary...yes,
that is my Word!

Okay. I know that there is Legendary
like a Cathedral in Europe...but what Im NOT going to do,
is get lazy and place Just Anything
in my little shop, that isn't as Legendary,
as I am capable of!

I hope that when you see it,
you will be pleased with what I've selected.

If you ever see anything that you are interested in
...use the Email button on the right column,
and I'm sure, that we can work something out!

The following images, are the Before and After images, of the process!

Here we go!

The Purchased items, started showing up in the "storage room",
formerly referred to as the Dining Room! :)
There were also larger pieces, stored in the garage.

That old ironing board has seen some use!
It is solid wood and VERY Heavy.
Can you imagine lugging that thing out to press a shirt?
I'm using is as a great display table for my Valentines!

You will see later...

More collections waiting...

I found an entire collection of
hundreds of beautiful creamers at an estate sale.
I selected... the most Legendary...:)

The beautiful linens that I found,
were washed and ironed...of course,
but Not, on the old Wood Ironing Board :)

There is a stunning finger tip towel,
with an embroidered "C" on it, in this group.

With Larry working so much these days,
I am hitting the road for auctions, myself.
Thankfully, the employees, load for you,
so after I get them home,
I begin the process of repairs and refreshing up.
Its a lot of work, but I love the fantasy of
Who has Used each piece and find
some interesting goodies left behind
in the drawers and spaces.
This is the bottom of a great English Bookcase.
You will see it later, with the creamer collection,
tucked safely inside!

Larry, helped me one morning,
with a loose hinge.
I couldn't have done Any part of this,
Without His Help!

Saturday morning, we delivered the large items
and bought and transported, the oak display case,
which will be perfect for showing my small offerings.

Here's an After shot, from Sunday around 3 pm.

Another angle view where you can see the
new oak display case, and the tall bookcase
that was last seen in my truck bed.

I added my Original Art Pieces,
so you can see that it is shaping up nicely!

I made the necklace on the mannequin.
It has a beautiful skeleton key hanging from a polymer clay heart.
I etched on a metal plate,
a quote from Dickens that I love...
It says...
"A very little key, can open a very large door."

What a Great Phrase of Encouragement,
to wear around your neck!

One of the best parts about opening in February,
was being able to make a great Red Valentine Display!
These are little ornaments, that actually started out as
unfinished corner baseboards.
With some polymer clay, fabric, wire and fibers... I did the rest!
They were great engineering fun!
One is called, "Love Bird" and the
other is a sleeping cat called, "Dreaming of You"!

This image, features my little handmade
faux leather envelopes with lavender pouches,
made from beautiful fabrics and fibers...
and of course...they Smell Wonderful!
I hand stamped words into the envelope
fronts that say things like...Friend, Unbroken, Timeless..
This is NOT an envelope,
that will end up in the recycling bin!
Ahhh, so sweet!

This is the Last picture of the Valentines.
The pillow on the left and the heart shaped
ornament are my hand mades,
and the little trunk on the back,
is a turn of the last century doll chest.

I think that you can see, that my love of vintage parts
and my heart to make Heirloom Art Pieces,
is evident in my little space.
I want to find and offer...Legendary to Me,
items, that are also Affordable,
and make it worth the trip to see!

If you are in Boerne, Johns Road Antique Mall
is at IH10 West, exit # 539.

Its really easy to find, and you should plan on staying a while,
as there are 70 shop owners!
I have been shopping there since it opened,
almost 5 years ago!
There are now, several Food Trucks, parked next door,
that serve up a variety of Yummy!

I hope that you enjoyed this little posting about my
Next Adventure, and will share the News
about it with your Friends!

My days are Full, and I stay Amazed at how My Life
constantly turns New and Exciting Corners...
All Of The Time!

It is Wonderful to Recognize, the Providence, in all of it!

Thanks for joining me in yet another,
Hasty Unfolding!

Sisters! Hastypearl

Sisters!

There are just Some People out there.
I hope you know One...or Lots.

I don't think they come in Lots.
Just Ones.

My One...is my Sister.

Eight years my elder.
One million years, my Mentor.

She mentors in all kinds of ways, that my mind and actions, haven't the skill.

In the 57 years that I have watched her...I have been the Learner.
She, the Teacher.

I've said before, that I've never known her to hurt me or disappoint me.
That's a pretty tall statement to make about anyone, right?

She's experienced life's Challenges.
The Kind that would drop many to their knees...
and if she indeed went to her knees...she Got Back Up.

Its been very easy for me to brag on her over the years...and I even confessed there's been too much idolizing,
but for the First Hastypearl Blog posting of the year,
I just wanted to honor her and say how THANKFUL I am, to be her sister.

She could Possibly kill me for doing this...but that's ok.
It will be the most Amazing and Sweet Killing, that I could ever experience :)

PROOF of how well she knows me...

The following pictures are part of what she gave me for Christmas!

Yep. It was a spot on pick, don't you think?

Some months back, Larry and I were at an amazing estate sale, in one of the historic districts in
San Antonio.
I looked up, and there in the Same Room, was my Sister and her friend.
We were so both "heads in the game", that we hadn't even noticed each other!

I cant pass up the opportunity to explain, that San Antonio is big, like over a million big...and we randomly? bumped into each other!
I LOVE those ODDS !

She had her fanny pack on and canvas bag under her arm...both absolute necessities for picking.

I Marveled at the Gift of That Day, but as I skipped...yeah literally...sorry...back to our car to leave, I was ever reminded, that being the younger, its possible that one day...I wont Have her anymore.

Just like has Already Happened, to many of You.

So, this morning, as I write this posting, its easy for me to see her in my mind, bumping around at an estate sale, with these two treasures on both arms...absolutely Confident that she's found my perfect Christmas gift!

Why?

Because she Knows Me.

Maybe you have a sibling that you love deeply.

Maybe not. And for That, I am terribly sorry.

But, If you Do...you are Blessed!

And If you do...it never hurts to tell them One More Time...how much they mean to you :)

so...Love you, Dinan...

and

To my treasured Readers... Happy 2014!!!!

Estate Sale Tools...Works of Art and Historic "Time Capsules"!

Works of Art

If you've read my blog for long, you will know that I enjoy shopping estate sales, and that
I have a weak spot for old sheds, dark cellars and boxes in the garages.

One of the reasons that I enjoy looking in those areas is because I am hoping to find a Vintage tool or two.

The tools you find at the box stores, just don't look like this anymore.
Sure, I enjoy an old nice clear plastic handle on a screwdriver now and then, but wood and brass...
yeah, that's says OLD!

SOLD

Now, its not that I know anything about what I buy, I just know when I see something well made and beautiful!
Its not until I get home, that the real studying begins.

Some estate sales companies, have workers specifically for these areas and I definitely take notes from them before I leave.

Or, even more fun than that...I've been known, to find an older gentleman, and introduce myself and ask him if he knows what I'm looking at.
You can have the BEST conversations with them. I have so much respect for their wisdom, and they almost always have a great story to go with the information!

SOLD

But, sometimes, no one knows what an item is and I just have to go home and start digging.

I guess, no one is surprised, that there are clubs, and websites, for just about everything these days, and that includes...tools.

If I am lucky, and so far so good, I will find what an item is called.

But more times than one, I have had an item, that in All of the internet, there isn't anything exactly like the one that I have found...and that gets me VERY EXCITED!

So, its been so much fun learning about this whole new world.

Some items, I keep and use in my Mixed Media Projects.

SOLD

Some items, are so heavy,...like this old "S" wrench, that weighs in at 5lbs., that I take them to my shop at Johns Road Antique Mall, in Boerne, Texas, where they can rest on a shelf and be admired...or bought...by a farmer, or rancher, wearing overalls, or a granddaughter that wants to remember!
I will NEVER forget what it Felt like, Smelled like, Sounded like, to be in my Grandfathers, blacksmith shop and that was 50 years ago!

The hand drill below has such a unique hand grip, that I haven't been able to find another one like it...Anywhere!

So, maybe its because my father's father was a blacksmith, that this girl digs a great Vintage tool box, full of wood and brass.

I know, they aren't frilly, and you cant find them at the mall, but I will continue to be drawn to these amazing Works of Art and Historic "Time Capsules".
AND I'll probably stop and imagine the man that used them in his life, every day.

If you ever see anything that you are interested in owning and its not listed at Hastypearl, just leave me a comment below, and I will be sure to get back to you...

Hope your days are great and you are enjoying your summer...

And as always, Thanks for reading my blog...
I Never take it for granted :)
